A rare and highly collectible antique Victorian era (1837-1901) 'man in the moon' brooch. Dating to the late 19th century, the brooch features the smirking face of a man carved in opalescent glass (also known as 'saphiret glass'), bordered by a crescent moon set with white paste gems of graduating size in a silver gallery. The rear of the brooch and the pin are crafted in 9ct rose gold.
Stamped for 9ct gold to the rear of the brooch.
Weight (approximate): 6.6g
Measurements (approximate): Brooch measures 24mm x 24mm.
Condition: Good, with wear commensurate with age. There is some slight discoloration beneath the opalescent glass, and three small, fine cracks viewable under magnification. One of the paste stones (the smallest at the terminal end) is missing. The gold has some small bumps to the rear and the pin is very slightly bent. The catch and hinge function well.
