A spectacular Stuart crystal ring dating to the 1700s. Stuart crystals are faceted gems made from rock quartz which were worn as a form of mourning (or protest) after the execution of King Charles I of the House of Stuart in 1649. They featured the initials of the king written in ciphered script, as royalists of the time were subject to serious oppression at the hands of Charles' successor, Oliver Cromwell.
This stunning and rare Stuart crystal ring is in exceptional condition for its 300-odd years of age. The crystal is clear and eye-clean, and holds a cipher in gold wire with black backing. Behind the cipher, bright pink foiling adds colour to the gem and flashes pleasingly with every turn of the hand. The band is crafted in 15ct yellow gold with a knife edge finish. This incredibly rare and remarkably preserved ring would make a prized addition to any collection.
No hallmarks are present, but the gold tests as 15ct.
