A bold and striking antique brooch featuring the Greek god Dionysus modelled in sterling silver and set against a luminous background of mother-of-pearl. This piece dates to around 1900 and the workmanship is of extremely high quality. It fastens with a C-clasp at the rear.
Dionysus is the Greek god of wine and festivity. His face is depicted on the brooch in high relief, bearded, with a wreath of ivy or grape leaves upon his head; behind him an amphora pouring wine against a background of bulrushes.
