A dramatic and dazzling pair of Catalan drop earrings dating to the early 1800s. Known as 'herring' earrings due to the resemblance of their silhouette to herrings in brine, a popular dish of the region, they are set with a total of 74 diamonds, mainly rose- and table-cuts. The gems are set close-backed, some with crimped collets, and are most likely foiled. Each earring consists of five individually articulated sections which swing with movement and bring sparkle to the diamonds as they catch the light. Crafted in silver, they fasten with gilded hooks with a back-to-front hinged mechanism, which are original to the earrings.
No stamps are present.
Weight (approximate): 31.0g total.
Measurements (approximate): Earring drop is 73mm. Width is 20mm. Total diamond weight estimated as 0.9 carats.
Condition: Very good, with minimal wear commensurate with age. The diamonds are bright and lively. All parts appear to be original, with no notable damage or wear. The hooks and hinges function well, but should be handled carefully given their age and the softness of the metals used. Please see pictures for details and don't hesitate to ask questions.
NOTE: To preserve the foiling, these earrings should not be exposed to liquids or moisture.
