A striking example of an antique late-Georgian era (1714-1836) mourning ring. The face of the ring features a small panel of finely worked hair belonging to the departed, surrounded by a halo of seed pearls (signifying tears) and a border of black enamel. The inner band is inscribed with script reading 'Dorothy Liddell, Obt. 8th June, 1830 at 49'. With wide shoulders which are intricately engraved with scrolled details in 18ct yellow gold, this diminutive ring is perfectly sized for wear on the pinky finger.
Partially hallmarked for London, maker's mark 'FS'. Gold tests as 18ct.
Size I (US 4.5). Cannot be resized.
Weight (approximate): 5.0g
Measurements (approximate): Ring measures 13mm at the widest point, tapering to 2.75mm at the rear.
Condition: Good, with wear commensurate with age. The engraved details are crisp and clear. The enamel work has some small chips, but no major losses. The glazed panel has light abrasion. The pearls all appear to be original. The stamps to the band's interior are incomplete, possibly due to a previous resizing. Overall, a lovely piece in very good condition for its age. Please see pictures for details and don't hesitate to ask questions.
