An exceptional Victorian era (1837-1901) sentimental brooch in the form of a padlock bearing the Latin motto ‘coer souvenir’, which translates to ‘remember the heart’. The motifs of the brooch - a padlock with a jewel-encrusted keyhole and a tiny golden heart dangling below - can be interpreted to mean that the wearer has a lock on the giver’s heart, or the key to it. The rear of the brooch has a glazed compartment containing the woven hair of the original owner’s beloved.
Set with an emerald, a ruby, and seed pearls, the brooch is crafted in two tone gold (yellow to the front and rose to the back). It fastens with a C-catch. It can be worn as intender as a brooch, or used as an extender to link or lengthen chains.
No stamps are present, but the gold tests as 9ct.
Weight (approximate): 4.2g
Measurements (approximate): 18mm x 27mm (42mm including dangling heart).
