An exquisitely executed antique Victorian era (1837-1901) mourning locket in black enamel and 15ct yellow gold. The front of the locket features a silver dove, a symbol of ‘letting go’ or of new life after death. The dove is crafted in high relief, almost every inch of its body encrusted with diamonds, with gold and red spinel embellishments. The rear of the locket has a gold panel, monogrammed with the initials ‘ME’ or ‘EM’, which opens to reveal an empty cavity which originally would have housed a photo or other keepsake. The condition of this piece is excellent considering its age, with enamel that is almost pristine, and all stones present and accounted for.
NOTE: Chain is not included.
No stamps are present on the locket, but the gold tests as 15ct.
Weight (approximate): Locket weighs 25.4g.
Measurements (approximate): Locket measures 41mm x 32mm.
Condition: Very good, with wear commensurate with age. The enamel is in excellent condition, with no chips and one small scratch of note to the front RHS (near dove's butt). The gems are all present. There are light marks and general wear to the gold, and no dents or notable damage. The locket opens and closes well (there is no glass inside).
Cost includes full insurance coverage for loss or damage in transit.
