An exquisite antique Victorian era (1837-1901) watch key in the shape of a Maltese cross. Watch keys were worn on fobs in Victorian times, kept at hand to wind timepieces. Although they were functional, they were made with fine detail and beauty, and today they make lovely pendants or charms.
This watch key takes the form of a Maltese cross: a symbol of courage, honor and bravery which originated in the 16th century around the time of Crusades. The eight points of the cross represent the promise of the knights who first wore it: to live in truth; to have faith; to repent of one's sins; to endure persecution; and to be just, merciful and sincere.
Both faces of the watch key are intricately engraved by hand with a scrolled foliate design, and it has a rotating bale. It is crafted in solid 14ct gold (with a metal core inside the key shaft).
No stamps are present, but the gold tests as a minimum of 14ct.
