An exquisite Victorian era (1837-1901) 'Order of the Garter' belt and buckle brooch. This large, annular brooch is set with polished Scottish banded agate of exceptional quality. The agate is a variety known as 'Montrose Grey' or 'lacey grey' in stunning shades of grey and white. The brooch is crafted in heavy, buttery yellow 18ct gold, beautifully hand engraved to the front and polished at the back. These brooches were traditionally worn at the shoulder to hold tartan in place. This particular one dates to around 1860 and is an extremely fine example of its kind. It fastens with a C-clasp at the back and also has a suspension loop should you wish to wear it as a pendant.
Not stamped, but tests for a minimum of 18ct gold.
Brooch measures approximately: 65mm x 55mm
Weight: approximately 23.7g
