A stunning Victorian era (1837-1901) mourning ring with a pansy design. In Victorian times, the pansy symbolised loving thought and memories (it's name comes from the French 'penser', 'to think') and jewellery such as this was worn as a gesture of remembrance.
The ring’s face is adorned with a silver appliqué pansy with rose cut diamonds to the petals. It is crafted in 18 carat yellow gold, with the words ‘IN MEMORY OF’ encircling the band. The interior of the band is engraved 'E Yarrow, Nov 25th 1837, age 58. W Yarrow, 4th Aug 1848, age 79'.
Size O (US 7.5).
Partially stamped for 18ct gold, London, 1847. Maker's mark 'JW'.
Weight (approximate): 3.7g.
Measurements (approximate): Head of ring measures 10mm x 11mm. Band tapers to 2mm at the rear.
Condition: Good, with wear commensurate with age. The ring appears to have been enamelled originally, with only tiny traces remaining. The diamonds have some nibbles, visible under magnification. The engraving to the rear of the band is rubbed and appears to have been previously resized. There is an open compartment behind the ring's face.
